Chapter 199 The Zhang Family
Chapter 199 The Zhang Family
Chapter 199 Going Home
At this point, Gavin glanced up at the cowboy hiding behind a tree stump in the distance.
The only one still holding a gun at the scene was that guy, and Gavin's eyes wouldn't linger on Jennifer; he was always watching for any potential danger.
Facing Gavin's gaze, the cowboy took a deep breath, then threw the gun aside, stood up from behind the tree stump, and approached Gavin.
As he approached Gavin, Jim, who was behind Gavin and clutching his leg, suppressed his pain and spoke to Gavin.
"Gavin the Boss."
"That's right, Jim. Even though this is our first meeting, Edward is your boss, isn't he?"
"Even just out of respect for Edward, you should respect me."
Gavin nodded to Jim, then turned to Jennifer and said softly.
"As for you, Jennifer, I regret everything you went through the past few days. That pain shouldn't have been your burden. Now that I'm here, you can tell your story, and by the way, tell me if you're satisfied with how Edward and I have handled things."
As he spoke, Gavin casually poked Elana's face with the tip of his silver dagger.
Why----
As he poked at it, Gavin sighed inwardly.
It was a bit of a waste to kill this person.
If Gavin came to this camp on his own, then regardless of what happened in this camp, Gavin would tend to deal only with the ringleaders.
As for the remaining people, the decision on whether or not to use them for experiments with zombies will be based on the severity of their crimes.
For example, will eating mushrooms from a zombie turn you into a zombie, or will drinking water that a zombie has soaked in turn you into a zombie?
Gavin is still looking forward to the results of those experiments.
After all, zombie mushrooms grow so fast, they're such great ingredients, even though they're disgusting.
If it's okay for living people to eat zombie mushrooms, but one day in the future, humanity happens to lose all its food sources...
At least the zombie mushroom was a disgusting alternative.
In short, Gavin was quite reluctant to part with Elana, the old lady.
But the conflict between Edward and that old man Giulio was far too deep.
Unless Edward has an extremely severe cuckold fetish, there is absolutely no possibility of reconciliation.
Edward, however, is clearly not.
So, given that Giulio was certain to die at Edward's hands, how could Gavin possibly allow Giulio's closest wife to remain alive?
Even if this woman is just an old lady in her fifties, what if she suddenly has a mental breakdown and poisons the camp?
This thing is impossible to guard against because there are too many zombies, and zombies are the best poison right now. Just mix some zombie meat into the food, and an entire camp could be wiped out. Gavin has to be careful.
Thinking of this, Gavin shook his head and then looked at Jennifer.
After a brief moment of stiffness, Jennifer spoke to Gavin, suppressing a sob.
"Gavin—boss, last night Giulio and—well, he came into my tent with Jim."
"I----"
"Jennifer—!"
Just as Jennifer finished speaking, Jim, who was not far away, suddenly raised his head and looked at Jennifer with great pleading.
"Please—"
"Hey? Jim, don't do that. I just want to hear a story, I don't want to kill another one. Don't force me."
Gavin immediately interrupted Jim's plea, holding the knife and grinning at Jim.
But the bloodstains on his knife and the corpse of Elana, whom Gavin was sitting on, made it impossible for Jim to laugh.
Beside her, meeting Jim's gaze, Jennifer took a deep breath, then nodded very slightly, and whispered to Gavin to continue.
"Boss Gavin, please allow me to explain. Jim did indeed sneak into my tent with Giulio, but it was Jim who saved me just before Giulio succeeded!"
"He—he did stop Giulio, and Giulio did punch him in the face, and Giulio even shot him in the leg."
At this point, a moment of confusion appeared in Jennifer's eyes.
Because she remembered something Giulio had said last night.
Giulio said that Jim suggested crawling into her tent!
Thinking about this, Jennifer suddenly couldn't help but want to say something.
But----
Looking at Jim, who was pleading with her, Jennifer couldn't help but think of herself last night.
Jim—that bastard!
I really wanted him to die too.
But—he responded to his cry for help, perhaps this was God's will.
Thinking of this, Jennifer closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and placed her hands on her chest in silent prayer.
After hearing Jennifer's words, Jim took a deep breath and then plopped down on the ground.
He went completely limp.
Not far away, the cowboy approached Gavin nervously.
He was somewhat hesitant to stand on the high ground and look down at Gavin, yet he also dared not sit down in front of Gavin.
So, after hesitating for a few seconds, he simply squatted down and looked at Gavin cautiously.
Gavin grinned as he looked into the cowboy's eyes.
This cowboy doesn't look very young, but he has a soft and timid personality. He's probably a farmhand, and he can make a decent living in the cowboy business without much competition.
Gavin trusted his judgment, so he lowered his guard against the cowboy who barely dared to speak to him, turned to Jim, and said with a smile.
"Jim."
"I'm here! Gavin, I'm here!!!"
At that moment, even though Jim was completely exhausted, he still sat up abruptly, causing blood to gush out from the wound on his calf.
Seeing Jim's nervousness, Gavin nodded, quite satisfied with Jim's attitude.
So he whispered to Jim.
"Actually, I don't like keeping someone like you around."
"You know, we all have a lot of evil thoughts in our minds, that's unavoidable, but not everyone can take that step from having a thought to carrying it out."
"Who hasn't fantasized about an unapproachable woman? Who hasn't cursed the enemy who hurt them?"
"But the distance between thinking and actually doing is too great; not everyone can take that step."
"And you, buddy, although you seemed to have a sudden awakening yesterday, I—to be honest, I seriously doubt whether your awakening was due to your reason or whether you were controlled by your hormones."
"You're someone who has shattered your own moral compass; I don't trust someone like that!"
"Ugh—wooo—wooo—wooo—wooo—wooo—wooo—"
As soon as Gavin finished speaking, Jim burst into tears, and he almost collapsed again.
As he could no longer contain his fear and tears, Jennifer and another cowboy beside him couldn't help but move their hands.
Gavin keenly noticed that detail and was certain that Jim was not someone that everyone hated.
Therefore, Gavin guessed that Jim was probably the kind of person who was a big mouth and a know-it-all, sometimes annoying but not to the point of being completely repulsive.
So Gavin chuckled and reached out to pat Jim's perfectly fine calf from a distance.
"I'm just worried, don't fucking cry like I've already torn the basket off."
"You should be grateful, and you must remember today, especially the final choice you made last night."
"I understand that tearing down moral values can bring pleasure, and doing evil itself is something that excites a considerable number of people."
"After all, apart from the lower class who have to claim to be morally superior, the higher you go, the more it becomes a world where people compete to be the worst and have no bottom line."
"But Jim, contrary to evil, pleasure also comes to a person when they do something righteous that aligns with their own moral compass, because endorphins don't just burn in evil; our brains give us the power of choice."
"So whatever you do, don't let me down, and I'll be watching you!"
At this point, Gavin stared at Jim in silence for two or three seconds. Jim's crying subsided quickly, then suddenly intensified.
As Jim broke down in tears, Gavin tapped the tip of his silver dagger against Jim's boot.
"You two."
He then spoke to Jennifer and another cowboy.
"Do you have painkillers in your camp? Also, does anyone know how to bandage this whining kid? Give him a little help so he doesn't die from Giulio's gun."
"And you, Jim, stop fucking crying! You're ruining my mood for listening to screams!"
"Listen to Giulio's screams, haha, although I don't know him at all, he must have the genes of a musician. His screams are so dramatic that I'm starting to look forward to Edward's methods of disciplining him."
At this point, Gavin sat up from Alana's corpse and gently patted his pants twice.
Beside him, another cowboy quickly raised his hand.
"I know how to bandage. I've bandaged the broken legs of my pigs. I can also find painkillers; I keep some in my tent."
"Okay, let's go then."
Gavin waved to the cowboy, who immediately swallowed hard and went off to pack up in the tent.
Gavin then came to Jennifer's side and spoke to her with a different, less intimidating smile.
"Jennifer, have you ever watched a football game before?"
"Of course I've seen it, and I'm a huge Cowboys fan, boss! I—I really love the Cowboys' spirit—brave, invincible!"
Jennifer responded to Gavin, trying to calm herself down.
Upon hearing this, Gavin grinned.
"Haha, you're mistaken, my friend. It's not the spirit of the cowboys that's brave and invincible, but me and my team! The spirit of the cowboys is clearly about being unrestrained and fearless!"
Gavin chuckled twice at this point.
He came specifically to deal with Jennifer.
After all, Edward is a master, a master among masters. As long as he doesn't die, he will eventually shine in my hands and become an important part of the camp!
Therefore, Gavin would naturally try to soothe his weakness; it was his instinct as the leader.
After all, the title of leader he now bears means he has to lead more than just one team.
He's practically a local tyrant!
It's not that easy to sit firmly in the position of a local tyrant. Even if people's hearts aren't wild yet, they will definitely become wilder in the future.
Therefore, Gavin needs to be more and more cautious and act more appropriately.
Seeing Gavin exchanging pleasantries with her, Jennifer lowered her hands from her prayers and managed a weak smile.
The screams of Giulio in the distance sent chills down her spine, yet she couldn't help but feel an intense sense of pleasure.
So, suppressing her emotions, she tried her best to give Gavin a cooperative smile in response.
"But boss, aren't you the core of the Cowboys? Your Cowboys are brave and invincible. You've spoiled us fans' palates!"
"Haha, thank you so much for the compliment, Jennifer. I'm a little envious of Edward for having such a great partner. How long have you two been together? Did you meet before the apocalypse?"
Gavin casually inquired.
Upon hearing this, Jennifer couldn't help but give a nostalgic look and said.
"Boss, before the apocalypse, I wasn't very familiar with Edward. I was just a poor girl living in the small town next to his. I had only met him once, and the first time I saw him, he was a handsome middle-aged man driving a Hummer and wearing a military uniform. I was only seventeen years old at the time."
"Oh? Really? Then he's getting a great deal. After the apocalypse, he'll be eating young grass like an old cow!"
Gavin couldn't help but make a joke, and the phrase "old cow eating young grass" is easy to understand even with a literal translation.
Jennifer finally gave a genuine smile, then lowered her head shyly and whispered.
"No, boss. Edward is a great man. I—I'm lucky to have met him."
"And we're not—we're not even a couple yet. I just—I just have a slight crush on him, and only today did I realize he likes me too!"
"ha?"
Upon hearing this, Gavin couldn't help but narrow his eyes and ask.
"Is your family religious?"
"Yes, my whole family are Christians. My dad even got into two fights with Davidians who came to our town to give speeches before the end times."
"Mazefaq, that shit Davidian cult, I killed a member of the Davidian cult a few days ago."
Gavin and Jennifer then continued their conversation about cults.
While they chatted, they watched as the cowboy used the same techniques he used to treat a sow's broken leg to give Jim emergency treatment.
After chatting for seven or eight minutes, the screams from afar, which had suddenly become louder, disappeared completely.

As the footsteps drew ever closer, Edward, his face covered in blood, returned to the makeshift camp moments later with a cold expression.
Seeing Jennifer chatting happily with Gavin, and even having a rosy complexion, Edward was slightly taken aback, and his cold expression finally softened.
He walked up to Gavin and casually threw Giulio's face and scalp at Gavin's feet.
"Holy shit, I'm shameless, no, I mean I don't sell human organs, so don't fucking dirty my boots!"
Gavin laughed and cursed at Edward, then kicked his face away.
Whether by coincidence or Gavin's intention, the face happened to fall right in front of Jim, making the already pale-faced Jim tremble like a leaf.
Edward shrugged at Gavin's joke and said...
"Boss, lame jokes are so outdated. I just wanted to let you know I've got it all figured out."
"I originally wanted that guy to drag his skinless head around the forest and wail for a week before he died."
"But then I thought, what if he can survive the infection? What if he can live with his head shaped like a braised egg? So I opened his skull, threw his brains on the ground and stomped on them, and even stuffed his eyeballs back into his—"
"That's enough! Don't fucking scare the girl, she's turned pale!"
Gavin interrupted Edward with amusement, then patted Edward on the shoulder.
Edward quickly looked at Jennifer.
Just as the two were exchanging knowing glances, Gavin clapped his hands.
"Edward, I won't give you time for romance. Hurry up and load the things from the camp onto the car. Let's get back to camp as soon as possible."
"Okay, boss. Also, thank you for helping me deal with Elana. Otherwise, I was afraid I wouldn't have been able to do it. After all, she cooked for me for a few days and sewed clothes for me."
Edward nodded emphatically in response, then took Jennifer's hand and spent a brief moment of tenderness with the girl.
Subsequently, everyone who was able to move around, including Gavin, quickly moved all the relatively important items at the campsite onto the vehicle, and even took down the tents and packed them up to take away.
Looking at the fully loaded car, Gavin sat down in the passenger seat with satisfaction and said...
"Edward, this is fucking great news! Giulio, that potential threat, popped up way too quickly. We not only avoided future dangers for the camp, but we also reduced the number of people, making the vehicles less crowded!"
"Yeah, boss, if all seven of us were crammed into the car, the seats wouldn't be as spacious as they are now."
Edward agreed and then started the car to return the way he came.
As the two ended their conversation, Jim covered his mouth in anguish inside the warehouse.
He was currently surrounded by a lot of debris, and his body was almost completely covered except for his injured leg, which was not pressed down by the debris.
Is this car really not crowded at all?
He was almost crushed to death, but he dared not complain!
After another two and a half hours of travel, dodging several waves of zombies along the way, the car finally returned to the vicinity of the resort.
When they arrived at the bridge across the lake again, Gavin's large yacht was already moving around in the lake, busy with its trawl net.
The expansive lake and the moving yachts undoubtedly increased Jennifer and the cowboy's anticipation for the campsite.
When they arrived near the cultivated area and saw three tractors at work and the land constantly expanding, all their expectations were met!
Nothing uplifts the spirit of returning from the apocalypse more than a visible and stable food source.
Just looking at that land moved Jennifer, and even Edward, who was driving, couldn't help but pause for a moment.
He was somewhat reluctant to drive the car across the farmland, and finally stopped in front of the manor gate.
When they got out of the car, Eugene and Tara were the ones who greeted them!
Upon seeing these two people, Gavin couldn't help but laugh.
"Eugene, why are you the one picking me up? Is Thomas busy working in the fields? How's your work going?"
'
"Don't even mention it. Damn it, Oak Valley is completely empty. The zombies there have probably been lured towards Richard Town."
Eugene immediately replied to Gavin, clearly annoyed.
"Even though the town was almost empty, we still couldn't find Tara's old friends. Those three left, definitely left. They took a lot of gym stuff with them and disappeared somewhere."
"
"Oh, really? That's quite disappointing, but at least I brought back three newcomers."
Listening to Eugene's complaints, Gavin gently patted him on the shoulder.
"Besides, at least Tara's old acquaintances took the supplies, which proves they didn't turn into zombies, right?"
"As long as the number of zombies doesn't increase by even one, that's a good thing, a very good thing."
