Chapter 269 The Helicopter Camp's Trail!
Chapter 269 The Helicopter Camp's Trail!
However, it is already March, and with the arrival of summer, the camp's fruit resources will be replenished accordingly.
Therefore, Gavin wasn't too worried about the lack of fruit, which was currently a scarce resource at the camp.
The only things the camp is destined to face in the future are electronic products that cannot be replicated or manufactured. As for things like fruit, these kinds of cultivated products are bound to be plentiful with the arrival of summer and autumn.
Moreover, central Texas is not lacking in various orchards.
At this moment, after receiving the fruit, Gavin casually picked up the knife next to the hospital bed and skillfully began peeling the apple in front of him. His knife skills were excellent, and he evenly rotated the knife along the apple's skin. As he peeled, he asked Manager Anna, who had followed him back to sit on the hospital bed.
"Anna, how's your arm doing lately?"
"Boss, thank you for your concern, I'm fine, really. Mr. Albert's medical skills are superb!"
As Anna answered, she rolled up the long sleeve of her severed arm, showing Gavin her still swollen arm. It was clear that the incision site on her upper arm was still severely swollen, with scabs still forming, and the skin around the incision was bluish-purple and greenish-blue.
However, her wound showed no signs of festering and recovered quite well.
An injury like a severed arm is not as easy to heal as Arturo's severed basket.
After all, although Arturo's basket was badly swollen, once it was removed, all that was left for him was a cut. Apart from the faint cut in his groin and the emptiness he would have to face in the future, his injury was really nothing serious.
And a severed arm... specifically, a severed arm that was completely cut off...
With an injury like this, there's no way you can expect to fully recover in less than three or four months.
Of course, Anna's mobility will not be affected much during these three months.
After all, Anna only needs to get used to the phantom limb sensation and the feeling of missing her arm. As for her missing arm, she doesn't need to worry about accidental bumps or knocks, since she no longer has a hand to bump into...
As for now, looking at Gavin's concerned eyes...
Anna kept saying she was fine, and even gently pressed the skin near her severed arm.
Although the skin is somewhat swollen, pressing it leaves a deep pit that won't heal for a while.
But Anna remained remarkably optimistic, smiling as she continued speaking to Gavin.
"Boss, at first I thought I was doomed, until you guys rescued me from that damn roof."
"Wang Ling is also a lucky girl. When she was with us, we really held her back a lot. It was only after meeting you that her potential was fully unleashed."
"As for me, I really owe everyone a lot of thanks for taking care of me during this time. I'm sorry that I still can't do anything to repay your kindness in saving me."
"But I think it will only take a week or two at the latest for me to be able to return to work normally. Although one hand is a bit of a burden, there are still quite a few things I can do."
"Of course, since I've lost my right hand, I'm afraid I'll need to work overtime for a while to practice calligraphy again."
"Even now, I still go out to collect eggs every day. Farm life is really great, boss. I love this place, I love our camp, and I love you, boss!"
At this point, Anna sat up emotionally, moved closer to Gavin, hugged him with her arms (one long and one short), and kissed him on the cheek.
Gavin returned the kiss by kissing Anna on the cheek, then had Anna sit next to him and continued talking to her.
"You even went egg collecting? Wow, that's really fun. Back in Dallas, you guys could never dream of living like this, could you?"
"Compared to city life, farm life definitely involves a lot more physical labor. I hope you can adapt well, but before that, the most important thing is to recover safely."
"As for your arm, Anna, Wang Ling's knife is too fast. The cut on your arm is very even, which is why you recovered so quickly." "Old Bert has praised Wang Ling's knife skills to me more than once. That girl's knife work is like art. She's probably been practicing with knives for more than three to five years to be so decisive..."
Just as Gavin got to this point...
Clatter!
The door to the ward was opened again.
Gavin looked curiously toward the doorway and saw Nancy, thin and pale, walk in, carrying a basket of clothes in her arms.
As Nancy walked into the room, she coughed twice and then whispered to Anna.
"Anna, I brought your change of clothes too, we... wait, Gavin? Wow, Boss Gavin!"
Nancy was overjoyed to see Gavin. She quickly walked towards him, carrying her basket, and strode up to him.
Gavin casually cut a piece of apple from the peeled apple, forked it, and fed it to Manager Anna. Then he asked Nancy, "Nancy, you live here too? I had no idea you two lived together!"
As he spoke, Gavin glanced at the two beds in the ward.
He had assumed that one of the two beds was for Greta, the blue-haired girl who took care of Anna.
Judging from Nancy's appearance, it seems that Nancy is the real resident here.
Upon hearing Gavin's words, Nancy quickly placed the clothes basket on the bed next to her, and rummaged through the clothes inside, gently covering her bras and underwear with her coat.
Then, she sat on her bed and nodded to Gavin.
"Of course, boss. The butler specifically talked to us about this. He thinks that the two of us patients only need to take care of each other, but the logistics work also needs more manpower."
"However, we don't think the butler is wrong. We are lucky to be alive. We shouldn't have any thoughts of enjoying ourselves. Instead, we should do as much as we can to keep our lives going."
"Greta and Meryl often bring us snacks and supplies, and that's enough. As for me, although I have severe asthma, my pneumonia is cured, and asthma can be treated with inhalers. I can take good care of Manager Anna!"
At this point, the beautiful Nancy looked at Anna with great excitement.
Anna, amused, pursed her lips and teased Nancy.
"Of course, you're definitely capable of taking good care of me. You've taken excellent care of me. It would be even better if you could snore a little quieter at night." "Uh... okay, maybe my snoring is really loud. I have asthma and rhinitis..."
Faced with Anna's teasing, Nancy gave a helpless pout.
Although Anna never filmed herself snoring, there's not much room for argument about her situation. Everyone knows that rhinitis and asthma are conditions that make people prone to snoring, and very loud snoring at that!
Gavin, seeing that the two got along fairly well, nodded in satisfaction.
Gavin was even more pleased with Thomas's arrangement for Nancy, an asthma patient, to take care of Anna, a patient with a missing hand. It was clear that Thomas had done his best to mobilize everyone in the camp.
That was about it for the brief visit. He continued cutting the apples, giving each of the three people a few pieces, chatted with the patients for a couple more minutes, and then left the medical room.
Dinner began shortly afterward.
The quality of the food hadn't declined at all these days, and the value of Doris, the white woman who didn't cook for white people, was still rising. After dinner, Gavin took his seventeen or eighteen dogs, barking loudly, and circled the camp a few times, both walking the dogs and conducting a temporary check of the sentries.
Since the outer perimeter guard posts have already been set up, they still need to be inspected occasionally to prevent the guards from accidentally falling asleep.
Gavin also consciously increased the frequency of these ad-hoc checks.
As night fell completely, the moonlight bathed the earth.
After a few rounds of light exercise, Gavin and Nikita fell asleep, exhausted.
Gavin, unusually, left his bedroom in the middle of the night, put on his coat, and strolled around the manor with his revolver.
It's 1:40 a.m., but even at this hour, there are still people patrolling all over the manor.
With the increase in the number of field personnel, the number of sentry posts has also increased. Now, a shift consists of four people!
In this way, with the four people standing separately at the four directions of the manor, they can have a clear understanding of the situation in each direction.
Although Gavin, Thomas, and others had already considered replacing field staff with office staff to allow field staff to focus entirely on training and field exploration.
However, the current number of internal staff is too small; they can only maintain the sentry posts in the outer farmland area for now, far from enough to completely replace them. Therefore, the field staff also have to take on the work of guarding the manor's indoor areas.
As for Gavin and Nikita...
Okay, ever since the number of field staff at the camp exceeded thirty.
When Edward, Martin, Steve, Thomas, and the others were assigning sentry duties, they tacitly excluded Gavin and Nikita from the guard duty. Gavin didn't feign refusal; instead, he readily accepted his comrades' kindness.
After all, the camp has grown into a large team of over a hundred people. At this point, the era when Gavin needed to do everything himself is over.
Especially once the initial management team for the camp was basically confirmed, Gavin needed to use various small privileges to consolidate his position and emphasize his rights.
The privilege of not having to stand guard is just right to be used at this time.
After walking around the camp and chatting with the guys who were changing shifts around 2 PM, I decided to take a walk around the camp and chat with them for a bit.
Gavin said goodbye to Steve and his team who were changing shifts, and went back to their rooms to continue resting.
The next morning, Edward, Sean, and the others started their plane before 8:30 a.m. and rushed to Shepard Military Base to conduct a major exploration. Gavin, however, did not dare to get too close to Houston because they lacked radiation measuring equipment.
Unable to continue advancing the Livingston Lake Astronaut Welcome Camp project, he temporarily joined Martin's field exploration team and personally visited Athens, near the camp, for the first time to conduct exploration.
After nearly two weeks of exploration, Athens is now much safer than it initially appeared.
First, Martin's group continuously explored Athens, repeatedly mobilizing the remaining residents in the city and gradually eliminating some of them.
Although Martin had only killed fewer than four hundred zombies in the past two weeks, it was still a reduction in the number of zombies in Athens. Secondly, after the Richard Town aggregation was destroyed, most of the hunters in Athens flocked to Richard Town. With a lack of hunter zombies and the Howlers not awakened, Athens, defended solely by its residents, couldn't pose much of a challenge to the exploration team.
And so, Gavin and Martin's group, following the area they explored daily, arrived at an affluent suburb of Athens. After inspecting two villas, they stopped at a clothing store and bought up all the clothes there.
Gavin drove his pickup truck back and forth four times to move the clothes from just one store.
Athens has so many supplies that a small pickup truck simply can't carry them all.
If it weren't for concerns about restricted movement, Gavin would have loved to have his guys come explore in trucks.
And so, after another busy day filled with close calls, we managed to get through it all without any major incidents.
In the evening, Gavin met with Edward and the others who had returned.
Sean was extremely familiar with the Shepard military base, and with helicopters being a powerful tool for attracting zombies, Edward's team didn't encounter too much trouble bringing back the radiation monitoring device.
And so, early the next morning, Gavin and his team, carrying all their equipment, once again embarked on their journey to Livingston Lake. (Livingston Lake temporary campsite.)
At approximately 9:40, the three helicopters landed as usual.
Edward was the first to test the radiation levels around the campsite, and after confirming with satisfaction that the readings were normal, he was completely relieved. After determining that there were no radiation problems near the lake, Gavin also confirmed that Li Qing's conclusion was correct.
At the same time, he led his men to erect the antenna high up and rearrange the power supply.
After setting up the power supply, the group gathered around it, weapons in hand, and spoke with the astronauts in the sky. Having informed the astronauts of the progress near Livingston Lake, the next phase of work could finally begin.
Gavin, holding a map, immediately divided the manpower. He led Eugene's team to the dock on the left side of the camp, while Edward led a separate team to the right side of the camp to try and recapture the dock there.
These kinds of docks are ultimately a hidden danger around the camp, and Gavin still hopes to clear the nearby zombies as much as possible when conditions permit. After all, there are hardly any small towns around Livingston Lake, and even if there are, there are only a hundred or so zombies at most.
If the area around the lake can be thoroughly cleaned, then Gavin won't have to worry about the loud noise from the return capsule causing a disturbance among the surrounding zombies, assuming the astronauts' return route is normal.
And so, the makeshift camp began a busy hunting operation, with gunshots ringing out in succession around Livingston Lake.
While gunfire was raging over Livingston Lake, near Camp Gavin...
On this day, Martin continued leading his team toward Athens.
Inside the pickup truck, Martin leisurely lit a cigarette, then opened the window, flicked off the ash, and casually propped his hand out the window, feeling the air passing by the car.
In the passenger seat, Wang Ling watched Martin's hand opening and closing outside the driver's side window. After a moment's thought, she said irritably, "Heh heh, Captain Martin, if you really like this feeling, wouldn't it feel even better with a little more acceleration?"
"What?"
Hearing this, Martin chuckled and curled his lip.
"Don't fucking tease me, chick. If I wanted to, I wouldn't be short of girls to pick up!"
"So, I'm not reminiscing about the feeling of catching girls in a whirlwind way, I'm just commemorating my lost past!" Martin laughed as he said this, and the pickup truck immediately erupted in laughter.
In the back seat, after a few moments of laughter from Barn and Judy, Barn, his face contorted with a grotesque scar, patted Martin on the back of his seat. "Captain, you're really good at making excuses! Don't think we don't know you've been pursuing that pretty asthmatic girl, Nancy, for almost a week, and you haven't even held her hand!"
"I'd bet my ass that Nancy has her eye on our boss. She looks delicate, but she has a great figure. I think Mrs. Nikita is going to face a challenge!"
"Huh?"
Upon hearing this, Martin immediately turned around unhappily and chuckled as he spoke to Scarface Barn.
"What nonsense are you spouting, buddy? Everyone knows Mrs. Nikita's challenger is that damn Winnie the Pooh! That girl's been eyeing the boss for ages!"
"So, Nancy still wants to run into the boss? Don't even think about it. She has too much competition; she'll know when to back down!"
"As for my pursuit of Nancy, damn it, she'll realize sooner or later that I'm a better match for her than the boss!"
"I don't care if she might like the boss. After all, Gavin is every woman's dream lover in America. There aren't many women like Donancy, and besides, her idol is the boss. It's much better than her being a stalker of Black women!"
"I fucking hate those damn bastards the most!"
At this point, Martin scoffed and spat out the window.
He is such a racist, and he never hides his stance.
This was evident from the moment he first met Madison.
Wang Ling's attitude was similar to Martin's; after all, East Asian discrimination against Black people was far more serious than redneck discrimination. However, such words were quite provocative to the two people in the back seat; Barn and Judy completely ignored Martin's remarks.
After all, Madison was considered one of Jane's favorites in the camp, and the conflict between Martin and Madison was an internal conflict within the early faction, which was not something that marginal figures like them could interfere with.
Hearing Wang Ling's amused laughter, Martin felt much better, so he immediately wanted to continue to criticize Madison and ZT, as well as that violent woman Tara.
But just as he was about to continue speaking...
Suddenly, a small black dot streaked across the distant sky, causing Martin to involuntarily frown and look over.
The next moment, Martin gritted his teeth in surprise and said.
"Damn it, look ahead! Look what I found! Isn't that a helicopter?!"
Without waiting for his teammates' reply, Martin took out his walkie-talkie and spoke.
"This is Martin. Is that helicopter Sean or someone else in the sky? If it's not one of ours, then...could it be the unknown helicopter we've been searching for all this time?"
